Make or Break

So, after a few years of knitting, you can still learn invaluable information from your fellow knitters out there. All thanks to Grumperina and her fleeting mention of an important book to her, The Knitter's Book of Yarn, I gained some invaluable resources about plies, twists, spins, and all those other terms which can make or break a project. Well, I started knitting before I read this book and my project broke.

Well, when I was a little boy, I went online and played on the internet. Then suddenly, Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool popped up on the page and it was going for really cheap. This boy bought a whole bunch of it thinking he can make the Irish Moss pattern by Alice Starmore in her book, Aran Knitting.

3 years pass, and this little boy is now semi-grown up, and is now endeavoring to try out this yarn on this pattern. No so much....... check it out guys:

Ok, maybe ya'll think that it's the photography, and it's not that bad or whatever. But I did try. These pictures were taken in broad day light, no flash. And it is a pattern FULL of twisted stitches. They are all lost!!!! I can't see anything.

What do you think guys?

Nice pattern, nice yarn, but they both might be better off separate rather than together. :-)

I love Silky Wool, but it's a very nubbly, noil-y yarn. For a pattern like this where stitch definition is important, you need a nice smooth worsted yarn with plenty of twist.

Kinda sucks when you don't get credit for all your cable work because the yarn doesn't show it off perfectly.

I actually like the subtlety and drape of Silky Wool with cabling. If you could live without everyone realizing how much amazing work went into the sweater, I think this would look awesome in an understated way.

But then again...why hand-knit if you can't get praise and adulation for all the effort?

I'm partial to understated elements. BUT since I am also vain when it comes to my skills...I agree with Joe--it's all about the praise and adulation. You have a tough choice on your hands.

I'm with Dave and Mel. I don't think the yarn and pattern are playing well together. It's not that pattern is completely lost, it just doesn't pop the way I think it should.

it may be better for larger cables, ie., 3x3, 4x4. before reading ur comments i said to myself "the sts aren't popping". so i was right. lol. yes, this yarn does not lend well to twisted sts.

The stitches are totally lost. I think it's time to cut your losses and try again with new pattern or new yarn. Why spend all that hard work on those cables only not to see them!

I agree with everyone else...scrap it! Use the yarn for something without cables or lace...maybe the Knockaround Unisex Sweater from Weekend Knits?

Have you tried washing a swatch of the cables? I have a feeling the yarn relaxes a lot, too.
