Swatching is a necessary evil

Swatching is a necessary evil.

With even the slightest thought of a new project, a swatch has to be born. I don't like swatching. To me, it's like futile knitting, but it is oh so necessary. You need to know what needle size to use to see how the fabric will drape, you need to figure out gauge to determine what size garment to make, you need to see how the colors will play with each other and probably a lot more other reasons to swatch.

So here I am, swatching for a new project. I am starting a scarf for Annie Modesitt's up and coming book, Romantic Knits. Of course, Annie has given me permission to blog about this.

The yarn is from Tilli Tomas. I will be using Disco Lights in the Hibiscus colorway, which is a scrumptious 100% spun silk with sequins twisted with it. Absolutely stunning.

This is a lace project and so here is my swatch. This project will be interesting. Here are some of the techniques used that I've incorporated into my swatch.

So 8 US? or 7 US? Can't really decide. Let me know what you all think.

I think the 7's are just fine, though I would use 8's in a warmer winter climate. However, I am a looser knitter than most, I would go with 6's, but (shrug) that's just me. And I think it's sooooooo cool that you get to knit for Annie!! :)

There doesn't seem to be much difference between them, but I'd go with the 7's. Even a bit tighter will keep the silk from looking sloppy & sloppier over time.

7 for sure. It looks much crisper.

Yup, number 7 it is. By the way, thanks for posting the techniques, they're quite helpful. I've printed them and sent them to a friend, who's a beginner knitter. Might as well start him on proper techniques ;)

Kenny, I feel like I already know you as several people from your meetings have mentioned you to me as a really interesting and beautiful man. I live literally around the corner from your meetings and have been tempted to come in just to try and meet you. My only computer is here at work and I cannot respond to imbedded email address's or I would contact you privately. If you have any interest in finding out more about me, please email me at berbarn49@yahoo.com.
